Back to the 50s

There was a great article printed in our newspaper recently entitled, "Back to the 50s." The individuals featured in the article were in search of a 1950s-1960s home with few, if any, updates.

They found a charming 1952 rambler that had been relatively untouched since that time. Upon moving in, they replaced a few light fixtures, painted the walls, removed the 70's shag carpeting and began acquiring furniture and other design elements from the 1950-1960 time period.

They have a pink 1960s Frigidaire Imperial that sits in their kitchen

and a nifty 1950's television set that still works!!

I found this article so refreshing. Today most house-hunters desire all the latest updates....from stainless steel appliances to jet bathtubs!!!

Several vintage shops, that I have never visited before, were listed at the conclusion of this article. So, we are going on a field trip. Don't forget your bag lunch and don't be late!!

Still Hanging On

Okay, maybe not the prettiest photo you'll see today. I planted these flowers last spring beneath the mailbox. They are still hanging on. Such fortitude and perseverance!! The petunias, snapdragons and asters are long gone......

A Favorite Sweater

Old Man Winter made an appearance this month, but he is gone now and we are finally experiencing some normal autumn weather. Out with the parkas (temporarily) and in with the pretty sweaters.

Here is my favorite. It probably does not qualify as "vintage" yet, but I love the style.

I believe my mother was the one that found this for me. It has become quite worn and thin in areas, so I keep it safe in the closet.

Notice the lovely floral detail on the front and sleeves.

I have a very small vintage tennis collection that is comprised of a few postcards and valentines.

Any "skeletons in your closet?"

I visited an occasional shop today and actually found a sweater clip!! I keep my eyes open for them at the thrift stores and flea markets, but rarely find them. This is the first in my collection that has button hole fasteners rather than clips. It has little silver leaves on each end. Perfect for fall sweater weather!!

I had only one garage sale on my agenda for today and it was conveniently located in my very own neighborhood. The ad for today's sale mentioned old typewriters, telephones, depression glass and kitchen gadgets. After I arrived and browsed for awhile, I realized that the items were priced well above the amount of cash I had carefully placed in my pocketbook earlier in the morning.

My childhood home is being sold tomorrow.

I have so many happy memories of my time spent growing-up there. I remember.....

relaxing on the front porch swing!
sitting in my cozy bedroom with the pink walls and ballerina drapes, listening to the sounds of tennis balls and baseball games from the nearby park.
playing "house" and "school" upstairs on the sun porch with siblings.
watching my father grow his tomatoes on the second floor deck and
playing board games with Mom around the dining room table.

This tin is another treasure retrieved from the attic of this home. It
measures 4 x 6 inches. Can you guess the contents?

Halloween Knitting

I have mentioned before that I do not possess a knack for knitting. However, every once in awhile I grab the blue knitting needles that I have had since childhood, and attempt to knit a dishcloth.

When I am finished, this dishcloth will feature a scary pumpkin/jack-o-lantern design. I have found many wonderful patterns at Knits By Rachel.

I'm off to watch the Twins game on t.v. now.

Thirty-degree F. mornings here.

Yesterday I threw on my parka, yes, my parka, and did some fast and furious work in the yard before the forecasted snow arrived.

I trimmed-up the overgrown shrubs, planted some flower bulbs and retrieved all of the paper airplanes that my kids recently launched off the deck.

The first snowballs of the season!

I found a few treasures at the thrift store this week. I hope to get them cleaned-up enough to share with you tomorrow.

Halloween Excitement

We did a bit of Halloween decorating this evening which always creates a lot of excitement around our household.

This book has created a bit of excitement as well...at least for me. The main character in this series, Jane Wheel, is an antique picker/junker who happens to solve mysteries in her spare time. Can't wait to see what trouble she gets herself into this time. BOO!

Rainy Days

Dark, rainy days are definitely a hindrance when attempting to take fabulous photos, but I'm not one to sit around and wait for the sun to make its appearance. I could be waiting days! So, please excuse the poor photos in this post.

To fill our free time, as the rain continues to fall, we have been playing a few "vintage" games that I enjoyed as a child.

Carroms was a big favorite of mine. My instruction manual states that "Henry Haskell developed the gameboard around 1889 as a way to keep young boys out of the pool halls."

The Partridge Family game is another hit with us. It was manufactured in 1971.

My children, of course, have never actually seen the television show, but they enjoy the game none the less.

Life Doesn't Have to be Perfect

The temperature switched from hot to chilly very quickly; typical Minnesota weather. Too cold for shorts, my boys sifted through their closet only to discover that they had outgrown all of their jeans. (Never mind the fact that I have been trying to get them into a store for weeks now!)

One of my sons stumbled across a stack of hand-me-downs that his cousins had graciously given to him awhile ago. He selected a pair of jeans that was too big in the waist and a bit too long. His solution: throw on a belt. Today I awoke to find him wearing a pair of jeans that, again, were too big in the waist, but this time, a bit too short. His solution: throw on a belt.

My point: My son has a “make-do” attitude. He can “get-by.” Life doesn't have to be perfect.

Now don’t think poorly of me as a mother. I have just returned from shopping with a bag bursting with pants! It sure is nice, though, to have someone in the family that can "get-by" on what is available at the moment.

You can't see the wonderful use of glitter, but it's there. Every card needs a bit of glitter!!

New Magazine

I splurged!!

I purchased a copy of Jeanne d' Arc Living. This pretty magazine is published in Denmark and, I believe, this is the first issue that has been printed in English. Both the content and the photography are wonderful.

We are still experiencing warm, dry weather here. I have been busy harvesting and eating delicious tomatoes from the garden.

Treasures from Garage Sale Gal

I had fun attending Deb's garage sale that was held a week or so ago!

I had the opportunity to meet her lovely husband and granddaughter. As I shopped, Deb tolerated my boys as they begged for a PS2 game console that they noticed was for sale. I purchased a cute vintage apron and

and some charming toy clothespins.

I wrote a post not too long ago about my passion for ballet. Look at the thoughtful gift Deb gave to me.

She also gave me some pretty cards, which I will enjoy very much.

Junk Market

There is a small little strip of stores located about a mile from my home. Some of the buildings are actually empty and the parking lot is a pothole mine, but twice a year this strip mall comes alive!!!

I attended the Junk Market this morning and discovered a wide variety of vendors set-up along the sidewalks.....antiques, cosmetics, jewelry, autumn and Christmas crafts, baked goods, sports/toy collectibles, handmade furniture, shabby chic decor and garage sale items.

I came home with a cute vintage Christmas towel.

I didn’t have the opportunity to do a lot of treasure hunting this summer due to the fact that my kids prefer to be just about anywhere other than thrift stores and flea markets!

I did, however, manage to scoop-up a few items.

I bought this Napco piece from the thrift store because I thought it was pretty and because I was curious as to its purpose. Vase?

Candy/nut dish?

Jewelry holder?

The rose sweater clip pictured above is a recent find too!! No need for sweaters right now, though. We are experiencing wonderfully warm, sunny days. I thought summer had skipped us this year, but it didn't......it's just late!!

A Sunday Parade

Our town has its yearly festival in early September. The festival includes a carnival, sports events, a chili contest, fireworks, music, bingo and much more. The highlight for us is always the parade!!

The parade weather was gorgeous...warm and sunny.

Even Santa participated.

I found this interesting book at the thrift store awhile ago. It is entitled, “Fabulous Fabrics of the 50s and other Terrific Textiles of the 20s, 30s and 40s by Bosker, Mancini and Gramstad.

It contains an abundance of information and lovely photos. Wouldn’t it be neat if actual little fabric samples were included?

I’m still holding on tight to summer. The weather is warm and sunny here today. However, over the weekend I came across a neat vintage “find” that will be perfect for the upcoming winter season.

Actually, I didn’t really have to find it. It was given to me as part of a garage clean-up project. I believe it belonged to my father. Some evergreen branches and a big red bow will decorate it nicely when the cold air blows-in...don't you think? Thanks for stopping by.

The U.S. Open Tennis Tournament has begun!!

I am excited about the women’s draw this year for two reasons. First, I am so thrilled that Kim Clijsters is back on the tour. She is great for the sport of tennis. She is a talented player and so full of enthusiasm and kind thoughts…such a wonderful role model for young athletes.

Melanie Oudin, a 17-year old from Georgia, ranked 70th in the world, is the second reason I am so thrilled about this year’s Open. She is hitting her way through the draw…beating all the highly-ranked players in her path. I love cheering on the underdog.

Any tennis fans out there?
